Last week Canonical announced it announced the launch of the new update of Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS Bionic Beaver , this being a version aimed at the desktop, server and cloud editions of the distribution.
Ubuntu is one of the most predictable operating system distributions in terms of the launch cycle (a new version is released in April and October of each year). Most of these versions are intermediate versions, compatible for nine months since their launch; but the April version of each even year is an LTS (Long Term Service), backed by five years.
“The Ubuntu team is pleased to announce the release of Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS (long-term support) for its desktop, server and cloud products, as well as other versions of Ubuntu with long-term support.
Like the previous LTS series, 18.04.4 includes hardware activation batteries for use in newer hardware. This support is offered in all architectures and is installed by default when one of the desktop images is used, ”says Łukasz Zemczak, Canonical.
In addition to arriving with a Linux 5.3 core , Ubuntu 18.04.4 supports new AMD and Intel chips with integrated graphics, the proprietary Nvidia drivers provided by Ubuntu have received several updates covering the new graphics cards network queue management is also offered that It should be more efficient, etc.
The arrival of preliminary support for Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) is also highlighted (details of the products in question are not provided).
Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS corrects several potential minor errors during installation , including an error that sometimes prevented a clean shutdown or restart from the installation environment. There are also some minor bug fixes to update the installations, but the larger patch class affects the system itself and the wslu package with configurations and utilities to integrate Ubuntu with the WSL environment (Windows Subsystem for Linux) was also added.
“As usual, this version includes many updates, and updated installation media have been provided so that it is necessary to download fewer updates after installation. These include security updates and fixes for other high-impact errors, with a focus on maintaining stability and compatibility with Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. ”
